A basketball standout, John DeBold earned four varsity letters in the sport while at Franklin & Marshall. He was an excellent playmaker and defensive player, as well as a high scorer. During his career, he established a 41-12 record, (78% winning percentage). He played in 17 of 18 games each season. In this era of basketball, F&M was in a seven-team league, meaning each team played all other teams home and away. In the 1940-41 season, F&M was undefeated, marking the only time this ever happened. The next year, the team only lost three games to CCNY, Rhode Island State and Santa Clara. After graduation, DeBold became a sales representative for the United Elastics Division of the J.P. Stevenson & Co.
