SWARTHMORE, Pa – The Diplomats split their two Saturday matches, defeating Swarthmore in Conference play, 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-15, 28-26), and falling to Stockton in non-conference action, 3-0 (21-25, 21-25, 14-25).
Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team is now 13-3, 4-0 CC while Swarthmore fell to 9-6, 2-2 CC and Stockton improved to 16-2 overall following their matches with the Diplomats.
Match 1 - F&M 3, Swarthmore 1
F&M began the day with a Centennial Conference (CC) match against Swarthmore.
The Diplomats opened with a 5-2 run in the first frame before Swarthmore went on an impressive 17-8 run to take a 19-13 lead. F&M rallied with another 5-2 run to narrow the deficit to 21-18, but the Garnet took the final four points to take the set 25-18.
F&M and Swarthmore were tied 14 different times in set two. At 22-22, the Diplomats finally pulled away from the Garnet- courtesy of back-to-back Allison Franke kills- to take a 24-22 lead en route to a 25-23 set win, evening the match at a set apiece.
The Diplomats came out red-hot in set three, claiming 11 of the first 12 points in the set. F&M coasted from there to a 25-15 set victory.
An early 4-0 hole put the Diplomats in a tough position, but F&M battled back to bring the score within one at 15-14. The Garnet tried to pull away several times, twice getting a four-point lead, but the Diplomats surged to take their first lead of the set at 24-23. F&M and Swarthmore went back and forth from there, until the Diplomats finally took a 28-26 victory, clinched on kills from Grace Polisano and Grace Maggiore, to win the set and the match.
Franke's 19 kills led the Diplomat offense.
Match 2 – F&M 0, Stockton 3
The Diplomats and Ospreys were knotted up 18-18 before Stockton took their final lead of the opening set. F&M kept it close, but at 22-21 the Ospreys took the final three points to win the set, 25-21.
Similarly close in set two, the score was tied 15-15. Stockton took an 18-15 lead, but F&M came back to tie the score again at 19 points apiece on a 4-1 run. A 6-2 run by the Ospreys to close it out ended a 25-21 set.
Stockton jumped out to a 12-3 lead early in the third and final set, including separate 5-0 and 6-0 runs. F&M went on an 8-6 run to start cutting into the lead, 18-11, but the Ospreys took six of the next seven en route to ultimately winning the set, 25-14, to complete the sweep.
Carlita Bozzo led F&M's defense with 17 digs.
F&M returns to CC play when the Diplomats host a match with McDaniel at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
