F&M Sweeps Tri-Match

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team delivered a 2-0 performance on Saturday at the Mayser Center. F&M downed Centennial Conference (CC) opponent Ursinus by a 3-1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-9, 25-5) tally before sweeping Marywood 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21).

The Diplomats ended the weekend 16-5, 6-0 CC while the Bears dropped to 7-14, 1-6 CC and the Pacers evened out at 9-6. 

Match 1 – F&M 3, UC 1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-9, 25-5) 

A kill from Barbara Kapustin tied the first set at 7-7, but Ursinus was able to record a 4-0 run to take a 13-10 lead. An Amy Mullen kill ended another run for the Bears to keep F&M within three, but Ursinus was able to keep the pace to take the first frame 25-21.

An ace from Allison Franke capped off a 3-0 run to take a one-point lead early in the second frame. A kill from Kapustin started the Diplomats on a 5-0 run with Delaney Hahn behind the service line. Four more unanswered points gave F&M an 18-9 advantage. A kill from Nicole Carey, followed by a Franke ace topped off a 6-0 run, while a service error finished the second set 25-15 in F&M's favor.

Grace Polisano and Casey Morrow opened the third set with a block to start the Diplomats on a 7-0 run that included two aces from Mullen. A back-row kill from Gabby Mavroidis started another short run to extend the deficit to 10 points. A service ace from Grace Maggiore increased the lead to 20-5. Caroline Elgut finished out the set with an ace to give F&M a 2-1 edge in set scores. 

The Diplomats exploded to a 17-1 lead in the final frame as Franke remained consistent from behind the service line, tallying four aces along the way. A Maggiore kill sparked F&M on another run to take a 22-2 lead while Maggiore ended the match with an ace. 

Polisano paced the offense with nine kills, followed by Maggiore with seven kills, 32 assists, and 14 digs. Franke recorded six service aces while Morrow was involved in six total blocks. Carly Ostrowski and Hahn each notched 12 digs.

Match 2 – F&M 3, Marywood 0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21)

A kill from Franke gave F&M a 6-2 lead early in the final match of the day. Back-to-back kills from Polisano started the Diplomats on a run to take an 18-11 edge. The Pacers threatened with a 4-0 run that was stopped by a kill from Polisano. Errors from Marywood ended the first set 25-19 in F&M's favor.  

A kill from Morrow followed by a service ace from Ostrowski gave the Diplomats a 7-2 lead in the second frame. A block from Morrow and Kapustin kept the deficit at three points, and F&M was able to end the set on a 7-1 run, culminating in an ace from Polisano.

Marywood jumped out to a quick lead in the third frame, but Maggiore was able to tie the set at 7-7 with a kill. Play remained close throughout as a kill from Carey tied the game once again at 15-15. A block from Mullen and Elgut ignited the Diplomats on a 5-0 run that ended with a service ace from Chloe Kong to bring the score to 24-20. A Morrow kill finished out the match for F&M. 

Polisano led the team with 14 kills and five digs. Maggiore tallied 26 assists and two service aces. Ostrowski cemented the defense with 10 digs and notched one ace.

The Diplomats travel to Gettysburg on Wednesday, Oct. 10 for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
