LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team opened its annual Scramble Tournament with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-15) sweep against Bethany on Friday evening.
The win improved the Diplomats to 11-4 on the year while the Bison dropped to 11-6.
F&M took the first two points of the match off a block from Barbara Kapustin and Amy Mullen followed by a service ace from Grace Maggiore, but Bethany was able to gain the momentum to take a 17-13 lead. Sparked by a kill from Allison Franke, the Diplomats went on an 8-0 run with Carlita Bozzo behind the service line to take back the advantage at 21-17. Carly Ostrowski topped off the comeback with a service ace to take the first set 25-19.
The Diplomats kept the pressure on in the second frame as a Casey Morrow kill extended the early lead to 7-3. Grace Polisano's consistent serving helped F&M to six unanswered points to increase the deficit to 11. The Diplomats finished with a Polisano kill to take the second set 25-14.
Maggiore opened the final frame with a service ace to help F&M to a quick 3-0 lead. Mullen notched a service ace as part of a 4-0 run to extend the Diplomats' lead to 10 while Nicole Carey finished the set with a kill to give F&M the match.
Polisano paced the offense with 10 kills, followed by Kapustin with nine. Maggiore recorded 30 assists, nine digs, and two solo blocks. Ostrowski cemented the defense with 12 digs.
The Diplomats return to action tomorrow, taking on Farmingdale State at 10:00 a.m., followed by Messiah at 3:00 p.m. to close out the Scramble.
