CLAREMONT, Calif. – Franklin and Marshall's volleyball team dropped to hard-fought matches on its final day of competition at the Pacific Coast Classic. F&M first fell to Occidental 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-20) before succumbing to La Verne 3-1 (25-7, 20-25, 25-13, 25-23). 

The Diplomats close out the weekend 1-3 while Occidental improved to 1-3 and La Verne finished 2-2. 

Match 1 – Occidental 3, F&M 0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-20)

Occidental started the match quickly; gaining a 6-2 led and kept the pace for the first set. F&M looked to take the momentum going on a late run with back-to-back service aces from Amy Mullen, but it was too late. 

The Diplomats fought to take a 5-4 lead in the second set. A kill from Allison Franke tied the game at 14-14 and started F&M on a 5-0 run that culminated with a Grace Polisano kill, but the Tigers were able to counter and finished the set with an 11-2 run.

Occidental came out strong to start the third set, taking a 14-5 lead. F&M kept fighting and a 4-0 run sparked by a kill from Grace Maggiore brought the Diplomats within one, but the Tigers notched four straight points to take the match.

Franke and Polisano paced the offense with six kills apiece while Maggiore recorded 22 assists. Carly Ostrowski and Carlita Bozzo tallied eight digs each.

Match 2 – La Verne 3, F&M 1 (25-7, 20-25, 25-13, 25-23)

With a slight one-point advantage to start the first set, La Verne delivered 12 unanswered points to take a 17-4 lead. The Leopards kept the pace to take the first.

F&M took the reins in the second set and an 8-0 run with Maggiore at the service line that included three kills from Nicole Carey extended the lead to 15-6. The Diplomats kept pushing and a Polisano kill finished the set 25-20.

La Verne opened the third set with multiple short runs to create a seven-point deficit. A kill from Polisano brought F&M back within five, but the Leopards ended the set with a 7-0 run.

An ace from Mullen gave F&M a 6-3 lead early in the fourth frame. Both teams battled for the lead, with neither one gaining more than a two-point advantage for the rest of the match. Mullen tied the game at 23-23, but La Verne was able to take the next two points for the match.

Carey led the offense with 11 kills followed by Polisano with eight. Setter Maggiore recorded 32 assists and four service aces.
