GALLOWAY, N.J. – Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team split at Saturday's tri-match, first falling to host Stockton 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-21), and then beating Farmingdale State 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-18).
The Diplomats improved to 10-6 on the year. Stockton holds an 11-6 record and Farmingdale evened out at 7-7 overall.
Stockton took a quick lead in the first set at 14-9. A kill from Delaney Hahn brought F&M within four and looked to change things around, but the Ospreys kept the momentum, going on a late 6-0 run, and eventually taking the first set 25-15.
The Diplomats started the second frame by taking a 6-1 lead with Grace Polisano serving from behind the line. Stockton was able to tie the set at 11-11 and extend the lead to 21-17. A Polisano kill and consistent serving from Gabby Mavroidis tied the set again at 21-21, but Stockton was able to finish strong in the second.
The Ospreys came out fast in the third taking a 10-4 lead to start. F&M went on a late 4-1 run to come within three at 21-18, but errors caused the Diplomats to lose the third 25-21 and the match.
Polisano paced the offense with nine kills and four digs and three service aces. Setter Grace Maggiore recorded 23 assists and eight digs. Hahn tallied six kills and four digs.
F&M started the second match of the day taking a quick 6-3 lead. Farmingdale tied the match up at 7-7 and then took the lead, but a service ace from Maggiore tied the set 13-13. The Rams were able to counter and took the first set 25-19.
Looking to change the momentum in the second frame, a kill from Caroline Elgut tied the set at 9-9. Three service aces in a row from Amy Mullen helped the Diplomats during a 5-0 run to extend the lead 19-11. A kill from Polisano finished the second set 25-16.
F&M kept up the pace, and two service aces from Maggiore helped the Diplomats take the lead 15-6. Farmingdale looked to come back, going on a 4-0 run, but a kill from Elgut kept the Rams at bay with the score 20-16. Farmingdale kept fighting and brought the score within one at 23-22, but Hahn ended the set with three kills to give F&M the win.
The score remained close to start the fourth set, and tied at 16-16, a kill from Maggiore led the Diplomats on a quick 3-0 run to take the lead. Barbara Kapustin was consistent behind the line and led F&M on a 5-0 run to end the set, with Mullen delivering the final kill.
Freshmen Maggiore and Hahn led the way, both recording a double-double for the match. Hahn had 20 kills and 19 digs while Maggiore tallied 38 assists and 13 digs. Elgut recorded 11 kills on the match and Mullen delivered four aces.
The Diplomats return to conference action on Wednesday, hosting McDaniel for a 7:00 p.m. match.
