HAVERFORD, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall upset the No. 1 seed Haverford 3-1 (7-25, 25-23, 25-14, 27-25) in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action to advance to its first Conference Championship since 2012. The Diplomats improved their record to 20-11 and have won seven straight matches, while the Fords ended their season with a 21-9 mark.
F&M takes on the winner of Muhlenberg and Swarthmore in tomorrow's championship match at 1:30 p.m. at Haverford.
Haverford jumped out to a big advantage in the first set, leading 9-1 before increasing the lead to 18-4. The Fords won the set easily at 25-7 to take a 1-0 advantage in the match.
F&M came back and started out the second set on an 8-4 spurt, capped off by a Katie Foreman kill. With the Diplomats up 13-9, Haverford score eight straight to take a 17-13 lead. The back-and-forth action continued, as F&M followed with five straight to take an 18-17 lead.
With the second tied at 22-22, a Julie Harvey kill made it 23-22, while Caroline Hubbard notched a kill to make it 24-22. After a Fords' point, Foreman ended the set on a kill and a 25-23 second-set win, to tie the contest at 1-1.
The Diplomats began the third on a 10-5 run, however Haverford came back to tie the set at 11-11. From there, F&M ended the set on a 14-3 run to take the third 25-14, and a 2-1 advantage in the match.
The four set was close early on, with the Diplomats leading 10-7. The Fords battled back to tie it at 12-12. Haverford opened up a four-point lead at 18-14, but F&M came back and tied it at 21-21. The close action continued until the score was tied at 25-25, Cassie Garison and Ellie Ezekiel had back-to-back kills to seal the victory (27-25) and the match (3-1) for the Diplomats.
Ezekiel led the offense with 13 kills, four service aces, and 10 digs, while Foreman added 10 kills. Hubbard finished with 37 assists, while Alyssa Sanchez tallied 22 digs.
