BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep against Bryn Mawr on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference (CC) play, edging out the Owls in three close sets at 25-22, 25-23 and 25-20. The Diplomats improved to 12-2, 2-0 CC on the year, while Bryn Mawr dropped to 10-5, 1-2 CC.
F&M fell behind early in the opening set by a score of 11-5 before rallying for a 10-0 run to pull in front at 15-11. Caroline Hubbard was strong from behind the line in the run, tallying three service aces for the Diplomats.
The four-point margin held for the remainder of the frame as a kill from Julie Harvey on set point sealed the 25-22 win. Up 1-0, F&M kicked off the second with a 10-2 run to take an early advantage before the Owls won the next four points to cut into the lead.
The Diplomats maintained the advantage until late in the frame when Bryn Mawr went up 21-20 off a kill from Samantha Abbott. Down 23-21 late in the set, F&M captured the final four points to pull ahead 2-0 in the match with a nail-biting 25-23 win.
In the decisive third set, both teams traded the lead throughout with neither squad going out in front by more than three points. Late in the frame the Diplomats were clinging to a 22-20 lead until a kill from Kelsey Michenko and back-to-back service aces from Alyssa Sanchez capped off the 25-20 set win to close out the contest.
F&M struggled offensively, managing to hit only .097 percent on the afternoon. The Owls did not fare any better, combining for a .089 hitting percentage in the defeat. Ellie Ezekiel led the way for the Diplomats with 12 kills while hitting .321 on the day.
Hubbard (14) and Ezekiel (10) reached double-digit digs while Hubbard rounded out the stat sheet with a team-high 23 assists.
The Diplomats played well from behind the line, combining for 19 aces in the match, including six from Ezekiel and five from Parys Zambas.
F&M returns home on Wednesday to take on CC-rival Johns Hopkins at 7:00 p.m.
