LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall fought hard but could not come up with a win on the opening day of the F&M Volleyball Scramble on Saturday at the Mayser Center. The Diplomats battled Lebanon Valley in five sets but lost 3-2 before dropping their match against Eastern by a score of 3-0.
F&M started the day off slow, losing the first two sets to Lebanon Valley (25-18, 25-21). The Diplomats began the third set strong by winning four of the first five points. F&M held onto that lead for the majority of the set until the Dutchmen pulled ahead 20-19. Lebanon Valley's hold on the lead was short lived, as the Diplomats tied the set 21-21. F&M jumped back into the match by closing out the set, 25-22, off of an emphatic kill by Candice Tussing, making the score 2-1.
The Diplomats success from the third set carried over to the fourth as they tied up the match (2-2) with a 25-22 set win. In the deciding fifth set, F&M jumped out to a 4-1 lead, forcing the Dutchmen to call a timeout. Lebanon Valley fought their way back into the set to tie it 5-5.
The score remained close throughout the set until the Diplomats found themselves one point away from dropping the match. Down 14-12, F&M battled to win the next two points and tie the set, 14-14, off of a Jian Lipowcan kill. The Diplomats dropped the next two points, as Lebanon Valley fought to take the set with a score of 16-14, to close out the match 3-2.
Candice Tussing paced the offense with 13 kills, while Jian Lipowcan added 10. Caroline Hubbard also chipped in on offense, recording 36 assists. On defense, Kerry Rom led the way with 16 digs. Alyssa Sanchez also contributed on the defensive end by tallying 15 digs of her own.
Against Eastern, F&M kept the score close in the first set. The Diplomats evened the score 12-12 when Caroline Hubbard landed an ace from the server position. Eastern answered with a 12-4 run to close out the first set 25-17.
With the Eagles up 1-0 entering the second set, F&M looked to battle back. The Diplomats had the score tied 4-4, until Eastern went on a 10-0 run to put the set out of reach. The Eagles went on to take the set by a score of 25-16. In the third, F&M jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. The two teams traded lead changes until Eastern went on a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to put them up 18-12. The Diplomats answered with a 7-2 run to bring the score to 20-19. F&M made Eastern work for their final five points, putting together a string of long rallies. Eastern was able to close out the set with a 25-22 score to hand the Diplomats their second loss of the day.
Rosalie Frank led F&M offensively with 10 kills, while Caroline Hubbard added 13 assists. Kerry Rom paced the defense with eight digs.
The Diplomats step back on the court tomorrow to conclude play at the F&M Scramble. They face off against Richard Stockton at noon, followed by a match with Susquehanna at 2:00 p.m.
