Diplomats Take Thriller

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.—In a back-and-forth thriller, Franklin & Marshall held off a challenge from crosstown rival Elizabethtown, taking a 3-2 victory in nonconference volleyball action Monday night.  With the win, the Diplomats improve to 16-10, while the Blue Jays fall to 7-20.

In the first set, E-Town rallied from a 15-10 deficit, scoring eight consecutive points to take an 18-15 lead.  The two teams went back and forth until the Blue Jays pulled out a 28-26 victory.  The Diplomats controlled the next two sets, winning by 25-18 and 25-15 margins.  E-Town would not go away, as they held off a Diplomats rally to take the fourth set 25-23.  In the deciding set, F&M scored the first four points, and never trailed en route to a 15-9 win to clinch the match.

Four players figured prominently in the Diplomats offense, led by Sydney Seydel, tallying 24 kills in 38 attempts without an error, leading to a .632 hitting percentage.  Julie Harvey notched 15 kills, and a .306 hitting percentage.  Heather Letzkus and Jessica Poucel recorded 13 and 10 kills, respectively.  Overall, the Diplomats had 73 kills in the match.

It was a similar story defensively, as five players were in double figures in digs.  Katy May, who recorded her 1,000th career dig this past weekend, led the way with 20 digs in tonight's match.  Harvey and Caroline Hubbard tallied 18 digs each.  Caitlin Krutsick and Lis Power had 14 and 12 digs, respectively.  As a team, F&M totaled 100 digs.

Harvey and Hubbard each tallied double-doubles on the evening.  Harvey notched her third, and Hubbard her seventh, recording 60 assists to go along with the 18 digs.  The 60 assists Hubbard recorded is the second-highest total in program history for a five set match, trailing only a 75 assist performance by now-head coach Mary Kate Boland on October 3, 1998 against Grove City.

F&M returns to the court on Wednesday, when the Diplomats take on Gettysburg in a Centennial Conference match at Mayser Center, beginning at 7 p.m.
