PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's Rebecca Swisher visited Penn's famed Franklin Field on Thursday, competing in the women's college division pole vault at the 122nd Penn Relays. The senior cleared a high of 3.65 meters on her second attempt, finishing fifth in a field consisting primarily of Division I competition.
Swisher opened her day by vaulting 3.50 meters on her second attempt in the first round of competition, making her one of 20 participants in the field of 29 to pass the event's first test. The bar was then raised to 3.65 meters, which she cleared on her second attempt, making her one of only eight competitors to reach round three.
The next height, 3.80 meters, was not cleared by any participant, so places were decided by performances on previous heights. As a result, Swisher tied for fifth with Diana Laboy Ortiz of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. Penn State's Erin Knabe took first as she had cleared 3.50 meters and 3.65 meters on her first attempt at each height before three failed attempts at 3.80 meters.
Diplomat participation at the Penn Relays continues tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. as F&M's Logan Lewis competes in the men's college division shot put.
