Dickinson Snaps Diplomats Streak


CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's tennis team split the singles matches and made the difference in winning two out of three doubles matches to defeat Franklin & Marshall 5-4 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Tuesday.

Anne McGillicuddy picked up wins at the No. 1 spot in both doubles and singles to lead the Red Devils (8-5, 4-2 CC) to their first victory over the Diplomats (3-5, 2-3 CC) for the first time since 1974.

Starting with doubles play, McGillicuddy and Caitlin McGovern earned a close 8-5 win over Dani Barish and Erica Wood. Dickinson won at No. 2 doubles, before Jenna Ishkanian and Valeri Harteg recorded F&M's first win with an 8-5 decision over Carla Cox and Merin Yu.

Dickinson won the first top spots in singles play, including a 7-5, 6-4 by McGillicuddy. Joelle Nitzberg survived a thrilling third-set tie-breaker at number two singles to make the difference for the Red Devils.

For the Diplomats, Ishkanian defeated Cox 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and Cecily Koss used the same score to down McGovern. Kelsey Tylus tallied the final point, recording a 6-1, 6-2 win over Melissa Nolan.

F&M returns to action on Thursday at Ursinus. Match time is 3:30 p.m.
