BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's tennis team clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming Centennial Conference (CC) Playoffs with a 9-0 bashing of Bryn Mawr on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats' improved to 12-4, 8-2 CC with the win, while the Owls' season came to a close at 1-15, 0-9 CC.
F&M earned a sweep in doubles, outscoring its opponents by a 24-2 combined score. Caitlin Rummelsburg and Sara Haas teamed at No. 1 and blanked their opponents by an 8-0 tally. Dana Sleeper joined Nicole Russo at No. 2 for the 8-1 win, while Megan FitzMaurice and Emily Gruenberg also picked up an 8-1 victory at No. 3.
Russo rolled at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 straight set decision, while Rummlesburg was solid at No. 2, taking down her opponent by 6-2, 6-2 scores. Haas rolled at No. 3 (7-5, 6-1), while Tara Buchney dropped just one game at the No. 4 position (6-1, 6-0). FitzMaurice earned the shutout at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0) and Allysan Breece dropped just one game at No. 6 (6-0, 6-1).
The Diplomats will travel to Chestertown, Md. next weekend to face off against the tournament's No. 2 seed, Washington College in the CC Semifinals. Check back with GoDiplomats.com early in the week for more information.
