NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Franklin & Marshall's women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 loss to Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon in its first contest of the 2015 spring campaign. The defeat brought the Diplomats' record to 0-1 on the year, while the Captains remained unbeaten at 4-0.
The match featured a pair of teams ranked in the top-20 of the Atlantic South Region, with F&M coming into action at No. 9 and Christopher Newport sitting at No. 15. The Captains were in firm control following a 3-0 sweep in doubles competition, outscoring the Diplomats by a 24-10 margin through the three matchups.
Singles proved to be equally difficult for F&M to traverse on Saturday. Sara Haas battled at the No. 2 position, forcing a tiebreaker in the opening set but falling by a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 score. Following a 6-3 loss in her opening set at No. 3, Caitlin Rummelsburg fought back to tie the match with a 6-4 decision in the second, but dropped a 6-3 set in the third for the narrow defeat.
Tara Buchney also fought of the straight-set sweep at No. 4 after a 6-2 setback in the first, tying the match with a 6-3 triumph in the second. However, her opponent proved to be too difficult to overcome in the third, taking all six games for a 6-0 score.
