FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Franklin & Marshall's women's tennis team wrapped up its fall campaign over the weekend at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, hosted by Mary Washington.
Tara Buchney and Sydney Fass both reached the consolation finals of their respective singles draws at the tournament. Buchney competed as the No. 11 seed in the blue 2 singles bracket, earning an 8-1 victory in consolations after dropping her opening match in the round of 16.
After a bye in the quarterfinal round, Buchney defeated teammate Megan FitzMaurice in the semifinals, who advanced in consolations off an 8-1 win. Fass also found success in her blue 6 singles consolation bracket, advancing to the finals with a pair of 8-1 decisions. The final match for both consolation brackets did not take place.
Nicole Russo competed in the championship singles bracket for F&M, moving on to the round of 32 after her opponent retired due to injury in the second set (7-6 (4), 2-1), but falling in the round of 16. Allysan Breece took part in the blue 4 draw, earning back-to-back sweeps (6-3, 6-1 in round of 16, 6-0, 6-1 in quarterfinals) before bowing out of action in her semifinal matchup.
Stefana Vujinovic reached the finals of the blue 5 draw, picking up three straight wins. She rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 sweep in the round of 16, followed by a 7-5, 6-0 win in the quarterfinals before outlasting her opponent for a 7-6 (2), 5-7, 11-9 thriller in the semifinals.
In doubles competition, Sara Haas and Russo teamed up as the No. 2 seed in the blue 1 draw, earning an 8-5 victory in the consolation bracket. Buchney and Vujinovic picked up a round of 16 win in the blue 2 draw with an 8-5 mark before falling by an 8-3 tally in the quarterfinals. Breece and Rachel Weinstein also took a round of 16 win with a 9-7 victory over a duo from Shenandoah in the blue 3 bracket.
The ITA Regionals mark the end of the Diplomats' fall season.
