MANHEIM, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's tennis team took down Christopher Newport with a 5-3 score on Sunday afternoon in a battle of two regionally-ranked teams at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim. The win was the fourth straight for the Diplomats (ranked No. 8 in the Atlantic South) improving their record to 6-3 on the year, while the Captains (ranked No. 13 in the Atlantic South) fell to 5-10.
Doubles play proved to be the difference after the score was knotted at 3-3 in singles action. A team of Caitlin Rummelsburg and Anya Sahaydachny were strong from the No. 1 spot, picking up an 8-4 win. Dana Sleeper and Megan FitzMaurice continued at No. 2 with an 8-6 victory to pace F&M.
In singles competition, the Diplomats' wins on the day came from Rummelsburg in straight sets from the top spot in the lineup (6-4, 6-4), a dominant performance from Nicole Russo at No. 2 (6-2, 6-3) and a gutsy effort from FitzMaurice at No. 3 (7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4)).
F&M faces a difficult test in the nation's No. 1 team, Johns Hopkins, Tuesday at home. Action kicks off at 4:00 p.m.
