Diplomats Open Fall at Shenandoah Invitational

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Franklin & Marshall women's tennis team opened up its fall schedule at the Shenandoah Invitational this weekend. The Diplomats competed against Christopher Newport, Bridgewater, and the host Hornets in the round robin style tournament. 

The invitational format featured each team competing against one another in singles flights 1-8 and doubles flights 1-4. The Diplomats took six out of eight singles matches against Bridgewater, won five out singles positions against Christopher Newport, and swept the four doubles spots against Shenandoah.

Caitlin Rummelsburg and Megan FitzMaurice led the way for F&M with undefeated records in both singles and doubles. Rummelsburg, playing No. 1 singles in her first collegiate action, went 3-0 in singles play while also combining with fellow freshman Nicole Russo for an unbeaten mark at No. 1 doubles. FitzMaurice teamed with Anya Sahaydachny for a 3-0 record at No. 2 doubles, while Russo tallied a 1-1 mark at No. 2 singles. 

Tara Buchney and Allysan Breece, both freshmen, also went unblemished in singles throughout the weekend, with Buchney going 2-0 at No. 5 singles and 1-0 at No. 3, and Breece tallying a 2-0 mark at No. 7 while also recording a win at No. 6. Buchney also secured an unbeaten mark in doubles play.

Emily Gruenberg and Dana Sleeper posted a 3-0 mark at No. 3 doubles, while Meredith Lackey notched multiple singles wins with triumphs at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. 

The Diplomats return to action the weekend of Sept. 21-22 at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Mary Washington.
