FitzMaurice, Sleeper Win Doubles Draw at ITA's

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Megan FitzMaurice and Dana Sleeper won the Blue 2 doubles draw to lead a group of six individuals that represented the Franklin & Marshall women's tennis team at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Mary Washington University last weekend.

The tournament included a Championship bracket, which featured multiple nationally ranked players, then five "Blue" singles and three "Blue" doubles brackets below that.

FitzMaurice and Sleeper, both freshmen, defeated three teams on their way to the Blue 2 doubles crown. The duo took down Ally McConaughy and Olivia Stone from Bridgewater, 8-2, in the quarterfinals, before downing Christopher Newport's Kim Morrissett and Jodi Noland, 8-4, to advance to the finals. FitzMaurice and Sleeper then won the draw with an 8-5 victory over Tina Kakadelis and Shawnte Woodson from Hollins.

FitzMaurice also performed well in the Blue 2 singles draw, advancing to the semifinals before being ousted by eventual champion Brooke Pottish of Johns Hopkins. FitzMaurice rolled past Randolph-Macon's Olayemisi Ogunshina, 8-0, and Swarthmore's Brooke Wilkins, 6-2, 6-0, before falling to Pottish in straight sets in the semifinals.

Julia Fiala also competed in the Blue 2 singles draw for the Diplomats. The junior beat Bridgwater's Brittany Wilson, 8-5, but was edged out by Christopher Newport's Marion Gloor, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.

Nina Simic, who competed in the Blue 5 singles draw, made her way into the semifinal round with a pair of wins. Simic defeated Eva Ng of Mary Washington, 8-4, and Epiphany English of Swarthmore, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to final four, but her run came to an end with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Nicole Olsen of York (Pa.).

The ITA Regional's wraps up the fall season for F&M. The Diplomats are set to open their spring season at Washington College on Saturday, March 24.
