CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Washington College, ranked 12th in the Mid-Atlantic region, handed Franklin & Marshall's women's tennis team a 9-0 setback in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday. The Shorewomen (12-2, 4-1 CC) went unscathed in first and third doubles as well as first singles. The Diplomats (1-8, 1-3 CC) kept it close at second doubles, as well as fourth and fifth singles.
Brittany Marshall and Jordan Finnegan cruised to an 8-0 win over Erica Wood and Kelsey Tylus at No. 1 doubles. Gabie Batista and Carrie Palmer then completed an 8-6 win at No. 2 against Valeri Harteg and Danielle Russo. Sophomore Mary Kelley and senior Kate Barston finished off the doubles sweep for the Shorewomen with an 8-0 victory at No. 3 against Shannon Littlefield and Nicole Martino.
Washington clinched the match with a pair of quick victories at the top two singles spots as Finnegan shut out Wood, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 and Marshall downed Tylus, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2. Palmer added an 8-3 win against Russo at No. 3, Kelley beat Harteg, 9-7, at No. 4, Barston downed Littlefield, 8-6, at No. 5, and Batista beat Martino, 8-1, at No. 6.
The match was played indoors due to high winds.
Franklin & Marshall returns to action on Wednesday against Gettysburg.
