LANCASTER, Pa. – Sabrina Ryan registered two complete games with 18 strikeouts from the circle to help Franklin & Marshall go 1-1 against Gettysburg on Tuesday in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action. Gettysburg took the first contest by a 2-1 score, but F&M bounced back to take the second game 4-3.
The Diplomats ended the day 15-17, 7-7 CC while Bullets finished 15-18-1, 5-8-1 CC.
Game 1: GC 2, F&M 1 – 7 Innings
The Diplomats took an early 1-0 lead in the opening inning of the day. Sam Martin got on base with a single through the left side and got in scoring position off a stolen base. With two outs and bases loaded, Caitlyn Erdman delivered the RBI-single up the middle to put F&M on the board.
F&M's defense put on a show in the early innings with Ryan retiring the Gettysburg batters in order with three straight strikeouts in the third.
The Bullets evened the score in the fourth, recording an unearned run off two errors. Gettysburg tallied what would be the winning run in the sixth off a solo homer from Shelby Baker.
The Diplomats threatened to even the score in the seventh when Jamie Belfer singled with one out on the board followed by a sacrifice bunt from Martin. Abi Buell recorded her third hit of the day with a single to put runners on the corners, but Gettysburg came up with the final out to seal the win.
Buell led from the plate with a 3-for-3 line followed by Erdman with two hits and one RBI.
Ryan (9-9) registered the loss, throwing for all seven innings, tying her career-high with 10 strikeouts. Gettysburg's Morgan Clauser (12-8) garnered the complete game win with seven strikeouts.
Game 2: F&M 4, GC 3 – 7 Innings
F&M opened the gate in the first inning of the nightcap after a grand slam from Hannah Salvucci to take a 4-0 lead. Martin got on base off a single while Buell placed runners on the corners off a single through the right side. Lexi Piccinich drew a walk to load the bases with Salvucci following with the dinger over the centerfield fence to clear them.
Gettysburg retaliated in the third, tallying three runs off four hits and two stolen bases to come within one.
Once again Ryan delivered from the circle, closing out the game with two strikeouts to help F&M secure its 4-3 win.
Salvucci led from the plate with two hits while four other Diplomats made contact.
Ryan (10-9) tossed her second complete game, earning the win after giving up four hits with eight strikeouts. Gettysburg's Skylar Spinner (3-10) registered the loss, giving up four runs in 1/3 innings pitched.
The Diplomats close out the regular season, still in the hunt for a playoff spot, traveling to Haverford on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
