F&M Splits with McDaniel

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's softball team went 1-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) action against McDaniel on Saturday afternoon. F&M came up with a 1-0 victory in a tightly contested first game before falling by a 13-5 score in the second.

The Diplomats finished the day at 12-14, 3-5 CC while the Green Terror sit 19-10, 6-4 CC. 

Prior to the start of the game, F&M honored its one senior Christine Miles

Game 1: F&M 1, McD 0 – 7 Innings

After a defensive battle to start the game, F&M's offense broke through in the third inning, tallying the only run of the game. Taylor Hudson led off the inning with a double to right field. Pinch runner Megan Giesecke went to work, getting to third on a stolen base. With one out, Jamie Belfer delivered the RBI-groundout to send Giesecke home and give F&M the lead.

McDaniel looked to respond in the fourth with runners on second and third with two outs, but Sam Martin came up with the catch to end the inning.

The Diplomats threatened again in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs off two errors from the infield but were unable to send a runner home.

In the top of the sixth, with runners on first and second with two outs, the Green Terror notched a single to center field, but Caitlyn Erdman delivered the throw all the way home to catch the runner and keep McDaniel off the board.

In the seventh, McDaniel on second and third off a hit and an error with two outs, but Sabrina Ryan came up with the final strikeout to tally her second shutout of the week. 

Belfer, Erdman, and Hudson each tallied hits in the game. 

Ryan (7-6) earned the complete-game win, tallying five strikeouts and giving up six hits. McDaniel's Cassie Rickrode (5-5) registered the loss, going for six innings with two strikeouts. 

Game 2: McD 13, F&M 5 – 7 Innings 

McDaniel came out with vengeance in the second game, tallying three runs off three hits, two singles and a double, and one error to take a 3-0 lead. 

The Diplomats quickly responded in the bottom of the first. Martin got on base after drawing a walk while Buell reached off an error. With two outs on the board, Hannah Salvucci came up with the two-RBI double to center field to keep F&M within one.

The Green Terror kept the momentum in the second, opening the inning with a single followed by a home run to right field to clear the bases. McDaniel tacked on three more runs off four singles and an error to take an 8-2 lead. 

F&M's defense came up with three quick outs to start the third and then the offense went to work. Belfer got on base after an error from the pitcher while Martin singled up the middle. Abi Buell came up with her first collegiate homer, sailing the ball over the left field fence to decrease the deficit to three.

McDaniel continued the offensive pressure, tallying a run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning, including another home run, to take the game 13-5.

Six Diplomats registered hits in the game with Buell leading with three RBIs. 

Ryan (7-7) took the loss after tossing for 3 1/3 innings, giving up nine hits and recording one strikeout. McDaniel's Rickrode (6-5) notched the win after throwing for three innings while Krista Walker registered her first save of the season.

F&M's doubleheader against Mary Baldwin, scheduled for tomorrow, April 14, has been canceled due to inclement weather. The Diplomats will return to action on Tuesday, April 16, traveling to Dickinson for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
