SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's softball team dropped both contests against Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon. Falling in a hard-fought 5-4 contest before dropping a 3-0 game.
The Diplomats fell to an 8-12 record with a 2-4 mark in Centennial Conference (CC) action while Swarthmore improved to 14-8, 2-2 CC.
Game 1: SWAT 5, F&M 4 – (7 Innings)
F&M started the first game with a bang, tallying three runs in the opening inning. Jamie Belfer got things going with a single through the left side and found herself on second after a stolen base. Sam Martin singled to center field, getting Belfer in scoring position, who was able to score when the catcher unsuccessfully tried picking off Martin who stole second. Abi Buell followed with an RBI-groundout to increase F&M's lead to 2-0. With Caitlyn Erdman on base after a walk, Hannah Salvucci delivered an RBI-double to right field to send Erdman home.
Swarthmore was quick to respond, recording two runs off four hits and two stolen bases to come within one. The Garnet took the lead in the second inning, bringing two runners home off three hits and a walk.
The Diplomats evened the score in the fifth with Buell and Lexi Piccinich opening the inning with a single and double to get runners in scoring position. Salvucci came up with her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field and the second out. The Garnet's defense was able to come up with the stop on the next batter to close out the inning.
Swarthmore tacked on the winning run in the fifth off one hit and one error to seal the 5-4 victory.
Belfer and Buell each tallied two hits on the game while Salvucci recorded two RBIs.
Sabrina Ryan (5-5) took the loss after throwing for six innings, giving up nine hits and recording two strikeouts. Swarthmore's Gwen Glatz (5-2) registered the win, throwing for five innings, while Luck Decker pitched her first save of the season, throwing for two innings.
Game 2: SWAT 3, F&M 0 – (7 Innings)
Both teams defenses battled in the early innings of the second game, but Swarthmore's offense broke through in the third. With two outs on the board, the Garnet came up with two singles and a stolen base to get a runner in scoring position, while an RBI-single gave Swarthmore the 1-0 lead.
F&M threatened in the fifth with two outs, the Diplomats got runners on the corners off an error and a hit but were unable to convert.
Swarthmore dealt the final blow in the fifth, tallying two runs off two hits and a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead.
Christine Miles paced the offense with two hits while Buell and Erdman each tallied one.
Emily Moll (3-6) took the loss, tossing for six innings, giving up seven hits. Swarthmore's Maddie Bowe (5-3) earned the win after throwing for seven innings with four strikeouts.
F&M returns to Lancaster for a non-conference matchup against Immaculata on Tuesday, April 9 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
