Schaefer Leads Diplomats Past Bears

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Izzy Schaefer delivered back-to-back shutouts to lead Franklin & Marshall softball to a 2-0 sweep against Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats took the first game by a 3-0 tally before winning the second game 6-0. 

The wins improved F&M to 17-15, 8-4 CC while Ursinus dropped to 11-19, 2-12 CC.

Game 1: F&M 3, Ursinus 0 – (7 Innings) 

Izzy Schaefer (12-7) pitched a complete game shutout, delivering three strikeouts and holding the Bears to just three hits to help F&M to a 3-0 win. 

Lexi Piccinich started the offense in the first inning, stepping up to the plate with two outs to knock a home run to center field to get the Diplomats on the board.

The Diplomats tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Leadoff hitter Sam Clemens opened the inning with a single through the right side. Sammy Burns delivered the two-RBI double to left center field to extend F&M's lead to three. 

Schaefer and the F&M defense did not allow a runner past second throughout the game with only one runner reaching scoring position. 

F&M outhit Ursinus 6-3 with Piccinich leading with a 3-for-3 performance and one RBI. Senior Schaefer went 2-for-3 from the plate.

Game 2: F&M 6, Ursinus 0 – (7 Innings) 

Schaefer (13-7) recorded her second complete-game shutout of the day, tallying four strikeouts and giving up six hits. 

The Diplomats finally struck in the third inning, notching two runs to get on the board. Christine Miles led off with a single to get on base. Schaefer delivered a single to push the runners, while Miles advanced to third on errors. Piccinich stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and hit a single to left-center field, sending Miles and Schaefer home to take a 2-0 lead. 

F&M's offense tacked on two more runs in the sixth off three hits. Ryan Correa started the inning with a single up the middle. Crystal Good notched a single to advance pinch runner Gabby Goodwin to scoring position. After Schaefer was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Clemens singled down the left field line to send Good and Goodwin across the plate to increase the deficit to four.

The Diplomats added two more runs in the seventh. Miles singled to the left side to plate Correa. Good followed with the second single of the inning to send Katie Wenger home and bring the final score to 6-0.

F&M owned the advantage in hits 10-6, led by Correa with a 2-for-3 performance. Leadoff hitter Clemens and third baseman Piccinich recorded two RBIs apiece.
