ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's softball team delivered its second-straight sweep in Centennial Conference (CC) action taking down Muhlenberg by an 8-5 tally in the first game followed by an 11-3 victory in the second.
The wins evened out F&M's overall schedule at 10-10 and improved them to a 5-3 CC mark while the Mules dropped to 8-12, 2-4 CC.
Game 1: F&M 8, Muhlenberg 5 – (7 Innings)
F&M got the scoring started early with three runs in the first. Ryan Correa delivered a triple to right field to send Sammy Burns and Sam Clemens across the plate. Taylor Long notched an RBI single in her first at-bat of the season to bring home Katie Wenger and give the Diplomats the 3-0 lead.
The Diplomats kept the momentum going in the second, adding on four runs to take a 7-0 lead. With two outs, Burns hit a single to right field to send Erin Russell home. Wenger notched a two-RBI single to plate Lexi Piccinich and Burns to extend the deficit to 6-0. Correa got the final score of the inning off errors in the field.
Muhlenberg got on the board in the second after the runner crossed the plate on a stolen base.
The Mules came within three in the third inning scoring three runs off four hits to bring the score to 7-4.
F&M struck again in the sixth. With Piccinich in scoring position, Wenger hit a single up the middle to extend the Diplomats' lead 8-4.
Muhlenberg notched the final score in the sixth, but the Diplomats finished out the game with the 8-5 win.
The Diplomats outhit the Mules 11-9 with Wenger leading with a 3-for-3 performance, notching her 100th career hit.
Izzy Schaefer (7-5) picked up the win after throwing for seven innings and recording two strikeouts. Muhlenberg's Nicole Bergamo (1-4) was credited with the loss after tossing for 1 2/3 innings.
Game 2: F&M 11, Muhlenberg 3 – (6 Innings)
Muhlenberg was the first to strike in the second game with a home run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
F&M bounced back in the fourth as Christine Miles tallied a three-RBI double down the left field line to send home Wenger, Correa, and Burns and give the Diplomats the 3-1 lead.
The Mules responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth with a score off three hits to come within one.
The Diplomats kept up the pace in the fifth inning, scoring three runs off three hits. With two outs, Burns doubled to left field to plate Russell. Correa followed with another double to send Gabby Goodwin home. Wenger delivered the third-straight double to send Correa across the plate and extend the lead to 6-2.
Muhlenberg responded with a run in the fifth to bring the deficit to three.
F&M delivered the final blow in the sixth, scoring five unanswered runs to take the game 11-5. With the bases loaded, Burns delivered an RBI single. Correa continued the momentum with another single up the middle to send home another score. Wenger immediately followed with a bases-loaded RBI single. Long notched the final RBI of the game with a single to right field. Correa crossed the plate on a wild pitch to bring the final score to 11-5.
The Diplomats owned the 12-8 edge in hits. Correa led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance. Burns and Correa both tallied two RBIs.
Wenger (3-5) recorded the win after throwing for six innings with one strikeout. Muhlenberg's Haley Fadek (6-5) took the loss after pitching for 5 1/3 innings.
The Diplomats return to action, Tuesday, March 10 with a non-conference doubleheader against King's (Pa.) at 3:00 p.m.
