F&M Takes One of Two From York

YORK, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall traveled to York College (Pa.) on Tuesday afternoon for a pair of non-conference softball contests, winning game one 4-2 before dropping a 12-1 decision in the nightcap. The split moved the Diplomats' record to 12-8, while the Spartans are now 19-9 on the season.

York got on the board first in game one, opening a slim 1-0 lead after scoring once in the bottom of the first. However, F&M took control in the top of the fourth when Taylor Long's RBI double was followed by a two-run home run from Katie Wenger to give the Diplomats a 3-1 lead.

The Spartans fought back, cutting the deficit to 3-2 with a home run of their own in the bottom of the sixth, but F&M responded with an insurance run in the top of the seventh. A York error on a Melissa Bollmeyer sacrifice bunt scored Kelly Van O'Linda, making the score 4-2. Wenger secured the victory for the Diplomats, pitching a scoreless seventh to earn the complete-game victory.

Wenger (7-2) gave up two earned runs on six hits, fanning six in seven innings of work.

Samantha Clemens went 2-for-4 to pace the F&M offense, while Wenger's two RBIs also led the Diplomats.

The Spartan offense got going quickly in game two as York scored five runs in the first to open a 5-0 lead after one. F&M struck back on an RBI double by Wenger in the top of the second, but was unable to fully erase the deficit.

York added another run in the bottom of the third courtesy of a Carleigh Ruleman home run, before a Ruleman grand slam keyed a six-run fourth that pushed the Spartan lead to 12-1. A scoreless top of the fifth saw York win via the mercy rule after five innings.

Isabel Schaefer (4-5) took the loss for the Diplomats, giving up eight runs in 3 1/3 innings.

F&M returns to action in its home opener on Thursday, hosting Penn St.-Harrisburg for a pair of games beginning at 3:00 p.m.
