Diplomats Take Two at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall picked up a pair of key wins in a Centennial Conference (CC) showdown against Swarthmore Thursday afternoon. The Diplomats (10-12, 3-5 CC) used a late run in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Garnet 5-4 (10-14, 0-8 CC) in the first game, and needed extra innings to take the victory.

Tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the sixth, F&M picked up the game winning run from a two-out RBI single to short stop from Megan Pauley that scored Laura Wagoner. The Diplomats held Swarthmore in the top of the seventh frame to claim the victory.

F&M struck first in the second inning taking a quick 2-0 lead, Julianne Whitleigh doubled to center field to drive in Nicole Casey from second. The Diplomats completed the scoring as Whitleigh later touched home on an error by the first basemen.

Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning to make the score 3-1 going into the final three frames of the contest. The Garnet drove in three runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. With two runners on second and third, Swarthmore's Chelsea Matzko singled down the left field line to plate Kate Smayda and Laurie Sellers.

The Diplomats immediately responded in the bottom of the frame as Alicia Kukoda hit a solo homerun to center field to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the top of the sixth.

Casey (7-6) earned the win for F&M, pitching a complete game giving up seven hits, four runs, and striking out five.

Sarina Lowe (2-5) took the loss for the Garnet, allowing nine hits, five runs, while striking out two.

In the second game, the Diplomats needed eight innings to get the win over Swarthmore. With two outs, Samantha Ginder stole second to put herself in scoring position. Casey hit a walk-off single to left center to bring home the winning run and claim the 6-5 victory.

The Garnet jumped out to an early 3-0 lead scoring in both the second and third frames. F&M battled back in the bottom of the fourth inning tying the contest off of a three-run homer to left center from Laura Wagoner to make the score 3-3.

After a quiet fifth frame, the teams each lit the scoreboard in the sixth inning. The Garnet retook the lead in the top of the frame, before the Diplomats responded to regain the lead in the bottom of the inning off of a Whitleigh two-run blast over the center field fence, to put F&M up 5-4.

Swarthmore tied the contest 5-5 in the final frame as Elizabeth Cushing hit a double down the left field line to bring home Jesslyn Lammerts and force extra innings.

Kaitlin Zampino (1-3) picked up her first win of the season, pitching 2.2 innings, before Justine Lohrey entered in relief, pitching 5.1 innings on the day. Lohrey, allowed eight hits, two runs, zero walks, and struck out five batters.

Lowe (2-6) pitched just 0.2 innings, to take the loss for Swarthmore. Relief pitcher Melissa O'Connor pitched seven innings giving up 10 hits, five runs, and striking out five.

Whitleigh was 5-for-8 on the day with four RBIs, batting in two runs, while notching one homerun. Wagoner added three RBIs, two hits, and two runs, while Casey contributed three hits and two runs for the Diplomats.

F&M returns to the diamond on Tuesday as the Diplomats travel to Albright for a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is set for 3:00 pm.
