Diplomats Go 5-3 On Spring Break Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – On the last day of its spring break trip to Florida, the Franklin & Marshall softball team split a pair of games. The Diplomats (5-7) defeated No. 20 Ithaca, 3-1, in their opening game, and later fell to Bowdoin in the second game 8-1.

In the first game, F&M came out strong against nationally-ranked opponent Ithaca (3-4). The Diplomats were the first to score in the bottom of the first when Malorie Sassaman singled up the middle to plate Alicia Kukoda to take an early 1-0 lead.

Capitalizing on defensive errors by the Bombers, F&M took a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the third. Samantha Ginder tripled to left field, with Kukoda touching home once again. To complete the scoring for the Diplomats, Sassaman hit her second RBI single of the game to plate Ginder.

F&M led by three runs through the next two innings, with Ithaca finding its lone score in the top of the sixth. Molly O'Donnell doubled up the middle to plate Francesca Busa, before Carianne D'Alessandro popped up to the second basemen to end the Bombers attempt at a rally.

Nicole Casey (4-2) got the win, pitching a complete game for the Diplomats. Casey allowed four hits, one run, and struck out four batters.

Jillian Olmstead took the loss, pitching four innings and giving up four hits and three runs, while striking out two.

In the second game, Bowdoin (2-0) came out strong by going up 4-0 in the first three innings. The Polar Bears got on the scoreboard in the first inning, plating two unearned runs. In the top of the third, Bowdoin touched home twice. The first run came off of a home run to left field from Gen Barlow and the second was an unearned run from Amy Hackett.

F&M got its lone run of the game in the bottom of fifth. Megan Pauley singled and then advanced to second on an error from the right fielder, which allowed Julianne Whitleigh to score on the play.

The Polar Bears opened the game up in the top of the sixth by plating the final four runs of the contest. Leadoff hitter Hillary Smyth hit a two-run RBI double to give Bowdoin a 6-1 advantage. The last two runs came unearned with Smyth touching home, followed by Barlow, to complete the scoring for the Polar Bears.

Casey (4-3) took the loss for the Diplomats. She pitched three innings, giving up five hits, four runs, and striking out three.

Melissa DellaTorre pitched a complete game for Bowdoin, allowing five hits, one run, and struck out eight batters.

The Diplomats return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader against Eastern. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
