Diplomats Take Two From Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LANCASTER, Pa. – For the second time in one week the Franklin & Marshall softball team has swept its opponent at home. Thursday’s win over Penn State Berks however, panned out a little differently. The Diplomats won the first game 5-2, and took the second game, which ended in an International Tie Breaker, 6-5.

F&M (5-3, 1-1 CC) got things started in game one, scoring two runs in the first inning. Liz Chudzik singled to center field as Megan Pauley rounded two bases to touch home. Julianne Whitleigh followed with a single to center to send home Caitlin Elfring.

The Lions (1-8) nabbed their two runs in the third and fourth frames. The Diplomats added another run in the fourth when Alyssa Yackle tripled to right center field then was plated by a single from Sara Damato. In the bottom of the fifth, Kelly Marchisio tripled to right field to collect two RBIs, as Chudzik and Karalynne Clark both scored.

Pauley and Chudzik each went 1-for-2 at the plate. Marchisio picked up a game-high two RBIs.

Chudzik earned the victory as she limited Penn State Berks to only three hits and fanned five batters.

Ashley Warner was saddled with the loss, allowing eight hits and walking two.

In the second game, the Lions were first to get on the board, tallying three runs in the first inning. F&M scored one run in the frame off of an Elfring double down the left line to send home Danielle Murphy.

After a quiet second, the Diplomats tied the contest with two runs in the third. Chudzik slammed her second homerun of the season and sent home Murphy. Action remained scoreless until the sixth when Elana Jaret doubled and Whitleigh touched home.

Answering with two runs in the seventh, the Lions put themselves back on top, but F&M countered. Murphy tripled to right field and Pauley singled to send Murphy home. With the contest tied after seven innings, the International Tie Breaker rule was put into effect. The rule states that the last player for each team to get tagged out will be placed on second to start the inning.

Penn State Berks could not manage a score and it was up to the Diplomats to take control. Whitleigh, who started on second, advanced to third on a wild pitch. She was then sent home when Murphy doubled to left field to earn the victory.

Murphy went 3-for-4 and picked up an RBI, and Whitleigh added two runs for the Diplomats

Larissa Tenley took the loss for the Lions. She allowed 12 hits and walked four.

Chudzik entered the game in frame two and picked up her second win of the day, striking out five.

Franklin & Marshall travels to Muhlenberg for a double header on Saturday, March 27. The first game is slated for 1 p.m.
