Diplomats Drop Two to Bullets

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Erin Ober notched five hits, scored six runs and batted in five more to lead Gettysburg to a doubleheader sweep of Franklin & Marshall (16-18, 4-10 CC) in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Thursday. The Bullets (24-9-1, 9-4-1 CC) took the opener 8-3 before needing five innings in game two to complete the sweep, 14-1.

Gettysburg started the first game out strong. They scored three runs in the first and two in the third inning to take an early 5-0 lead. F&M had a chance to get runners across the plate in the second. The Diplomats loaded the bases with no outs, but Gettysburg’s pitcher Kristy Rubino retired three straight batters.

The Diplomats answered in the third and fourth innings, combining for three runs, making the score 5-3. F&M’s first run in the fourth came courtesy of a wild pitch. Lauren Incorvaia’s single to right field, plated Alyssa Yackle for the second score of the frame. They added one more run in the fifth when Samantha Basuk walked, scoring Jessica Feldman.

The Bullets tacked on one run in fifth and two in the sixth, increasing their lead to 8-3.
Ober led all players, going 3-for-4, scoring three runs and knocking in one more. Basuk was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Diplomats.

Rubino picked up the win for the Bullets, improving to 11-6 on the year. She pitched 4.2 innings, striking out five and giving up three earned runs.
Meredith Morgan suffered the loss. Morgan (7-5) struck out five and issued two walks in six innings.

Game two started out similar to the first. The Bullets struck early and often, scoring 13 runs in the first four innings of the game. F&M managed a run in the fourth on a Sara Damato RBI. The game ended after five innings with the score 14-1.

Beth McCullough twirled a gem for Gettysburg. McCullough (12-3) struck on four and induced nine ground outs in five innings of work.

Ober turned in another great performance. She was 2-for-2, scoring three runs and driving in four more.

The Diplomats return to action Saturday with a doubleheader versus Dickinson. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm. All seniors will be honored in between games.
