LANCASTER, Pa. – Emily O'Hara's 91st-minute tally helped Franklin & Marshall's women's soccer team knock off McDaniel on Wednesday evening by a 2-1 OT score at Tylus Field.
The Centennial Conference (CC) win improved the Diplomats to 4-5-1, 1-3-1 CC while the Green Terror dropped to 8-3, 4-1 CC.
In the opening minute of overtime, Reanna Leoni took possession of the ball at midfield and sent a ball over the top of the backline to O'Hara, who split a pair of defenders and sent an attempt on net. Her shot appeared to be handled by the McDaniel goalkeeper but managed to sneak underneath her for the game-winner.
Goalkeeper Gabby Panayotakis (4-5-1) earned the win in net after recording a pair of saves while the Green Terror's Sydney Kelly (1-2) suffered the loss after stopping three shots.
The win over McDaniel was F&M's first since the 2012 season.
Reanna Leoni got the Diplomats on the board in the 26th minute of the first half with a strong individual effort along the McDaniel end line, dribbling around a Green Terror defender and sending a well-placed strike into the upper-right corner of the goal for the 1-0 edge.
That score held until three minutes into the second half when the Green Terror's Jackie Fahrenholz lofted a shot from 25 yards out, which was mishandled by F&M's 'keeper, hitting off her hands and landing in the top-right corner to even the score at 1-1.
Panayotakis came up with a huge stop in net to preserve the tie in the 67th minute, sprawling out for a diving stop to her right off a McDaniel attempt from 15 yards out.
McDaniel held the narrow edge on the shot count at 13-10, however, both team's registered six in the second half. Corners were also in the Green Terror's favor at 8-3.
F&M looks to build on the momentum of its first CC win of the season when the Diplomats travel to Ursinus on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. game.
