MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – No. 5 Franklin & Marshall came away with a 19-7 victory over Illinois Wesleyan in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats will take on host No. 3 Middlebury tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
F&M will look to advance to the program's third Final Four appearance, heading into tomorrow with a 17-4 mark while the Titans' season ended at 18-3.
Nancy Taylor evened the score early in the game, tallying the free-position goal from the top of the fan at the 23:16 mark. Illinois Wesleyan responded less than a minute later, but Caroline Kolva was able to strike with just over 20 minutes in the half, crashing down the middle to even the score at 2-2. Megan Jackson delivered the riser goal at the 18:49 mark off the dish from Jane Cote, sparking the Diplomats on an 8-1 run that included three-straight goals from Grace Norley over a four-minute span to take an 11-3 edge into the break.
The Diplomats opened the second half with four goals in the opening 10 minutes including back-to-back goals from Ally Marino to increase the deficit to 12. Marissa McGarrey and Maisie O'Shea got in on the action with a three-goal run over four minutes to bring the score to 18-4.
Norley, Maddie Hughes, and McGarrey each registered three goals each while Cote finished the day with six assists. O'Shea, Taylor, and Marino followed with two apiece.
