LANCASTER, Pa. – Lily Mynott's first-career hat trick gave No. 11 Franklin & Marshall field hockey a 5-0 win in the Diplomats' home opener over Mary Washington on Saturday.
F&M improved to 4-0 while the Eagles fell to 2-2.
The Diplomats opened the scoring in the eighth minute of action when Erin Coverdale took an Addie Peters cross from the right side to blast in her fourth goal of the season, taking a 1-0 lead. Coverdale's goal was her second consecutive game-winner, and the 16th in her career, giving her sole possession of the program record.
Six minutes later, Mynott began her scoring barrage. The forward scored her first goal to the left side after taking a Coverdale pass to the top of the circle in the 14th minute of play. The Diplomats maintained the 2-0 deficit for the remainder of the first half.
In the second half, Darby Klopp found Mynott in the center of the circle as Mynott scored for the second time, extending the lead to 3-0.
Coverdale fed Mynott again to complete the hat trick and extend the lead to 4-0 over the Eagles in the 50th minute. Mynott now has six goals on the season.
The final score for F&M came with less than three minutes remaining in the game. Sydney Wieczkowski deflected a pass from Emma Durantine to give F&M a 5-0 advantage. Wieczkowski's goal was the first in her career.
Christina Seery (4-0) guided the F&M defense with her second shutout of the season, recording two saves on the day as the Diplomat defense held Mary Washington to just four shots in the contest.
The Diplomats host York College at Tylus Field on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
