ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – No. 10 Franklin & Marshall opened up its 2019 season with a 6-1 victory over Elizabethtown in non-conference competition on Friday afternoon.
The Diplomats improved to a record of 1-0, while the Blue Jays fell to 0-1.
F&M was aggressive early, attacking with three shot attempts in the first 2:30 of play. Melissa Gula '20 opened up the scoring for the Diplomats with a 13th-minute tally, taking a feed from Lily Mynott and finding the back of the cage for the 1-0 edge.
Just two minutes into the second quarter, F&M added on when Darby Klopp tallied her first-career tally. The first-year defender collected a loss ball in front and snuck a shot between the legs of Elizabethtown's goalkeeper.
Six minutes later, returning All-American Erin Coverdale ripped home a pass from Addie Peters to send the Diplomats into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead. The Diplomats needed just 32 seconds into the second half to make it a 4-0 game when Mynott struck again with a shot to the left side of the goal.
Klopp recorded her second marker in the 40th, once again beating the 'keeper off a solo score before F&M finished off its scoring streak with Mynott's second of the contest in the 42nd.
Mynott and Klopp each put together two-goal, one-assist efforts in their season debuts. The Diplomats led in shots by a 20-5 margin, including a 10-0 edge in the opening half. Penalty corners also favored F&M at 8-2.
The Diplomats continue their early-season road stand with a 7:00 p.m. matchup against FDU-Florham on Wednesday.
