LANCASTER, Pa. – No. 10 Franklin & Marshall is set to host Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday in the first round of the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament at 6:00 p.m. Tickets will cost $5 for adults and $3 for students with ID's, senior citizens and children.
Please note that pets are not permitted at Tylus Field during NCAA play.
Series History: Wednesday's meeting between F&M (16-3) and Gwynedd Mercy (13-6) is one of eight first-round contests to be played in the 24-team NCAA Tournament. This will be the first meeting between the two programs.
Tournament History: This NCAA Tournament bid marks the 12th overall and fifth consecutive appearance for the Diplomats, who have now reached the Tournament seven out of the last eight seasons. F&M holds a 5-1 record in NCAA First Round contests with a 15-11 overall record in the Tournament.
The Diplomats highest finish in the tournament came in 1981 when F&M fell to Trenton State 2-0 in the Championship game. F&M made it to the Final Four last year, falling to eventual champions Middlebury by a 2-1 tally.
This appearance is the seventh in program history for Gwynedd Mercy, with the Griffins most recent berth coming in last year's Tournament, which was cut short by Trinity (Conn.) in the First Round.
How They Got Here: F&M earned one of five Pool C bids after falling to Johns Hopkins in the Centennial Conference (CC) Championship game on Sunday. Gwynedd entered via one of two Pool B bids, representing the Atlantic East Conference, who as a first-year conference is not eligible for an automatic qualifier.
Tournament Outlook: The winner advances to a four-team regional, hosted by No. 3 Rowan, to face off against No. 8 Rochester (18-2) on Saturday. Undefeated Rowan (20-0) is hosting the other Sweet 16 matchup, taking on the winner of Lynchburg (15-5) and Denison (18-2).
