LANCASTER, Pa. – Two goals from Erin Coverdale with less than six minutes left in regulation lifted No. 12 Franklin & Marshall over No. 20 Ursinus by a 3-2 score in Centennial Conference (CC) action at Tylus Field on Saturday afternoon.
The win improved the Diplomats to 10-2, 5-1 CC while the Bears dropped to 7-4, 5-1 CC.
With less than a minute left and the game knotted at 2-2, Coverdale tallied her second goal of the day by gathering the insert off an Emily Nagle penalty corner and blasting the ball into the back of the cage from the top of the circle to give F&M the game.
Five minutes earlier and with F&M down by a score, Coverdale evened out the score off the same set play from Nagle after the Diplomats were awarded a corner in the 65th minute. Coverdale launched another long shot into the left side of the cage to tie the game at 2-2.
Ursinus notched its two goals of the game in the second half to take the lead, scoring four minutes into the period, and tallying another goal less than four minutes later to take a 2-1 lead.
Caitlin Morrissey recorded her fifth goal of the season off a penalty corner in the 18th minute of action.
Ilianna Santangelo (10-2) took the win after turning away two shots while Jules Singer (7-4) took the loss after a four-save effort.
Coverdale paced the offense with seven shots, followed by Morrissey and Melissa Gula with two apiece.
The Diplomats owned the edge in both shots (11-7) and penalty corners (11-8).
F&M returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 10, traveling to Gettysburg for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
