ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's No. 5 field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 contest to Muhlenberg to open Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday afternoon.
The Diplomats fell to 5-1, 0-1 CC while the Mules improved to 1-4, 1-0 CC.
F&M dominated possession to start the game, outshooting Muhlenberg 5-0 in the first half. Erin Coverdale fired back-to-back shots in the 12th minute but was unable to find the back of the cage.
Muhlenberg notched the lone goal of the game in the 44th minute from Stephi Rydgren off a penalty corner. The Diplomats kept the pressure on, tallying six more shots in the second frame, with Emily Nagle's final attempt just missing wide with less than three minutes left in the game.
F&M held the advantage in shots 12-2 and penalty corners 10-1. Coverdale and Melissa Gula led the charge with four shots, followed by Nagle with three.
Ilianna Santangelo (5-1) took the loss with one save on the day while Jordan Segrave (1-3) earned the win after turning away six shots.
The Diplomats return home on Wednesday, hosting Dickinson at 7:00 p.m.
