LANCASTER, Pa. - Erin Coverdale netted two goals and the Franklin & Marshall field hockey defense allowed just one shot on cage in a dominant 3-0 shutout of Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon in the Connie Harnum Classic Championship game.
The No. 4 Diplomats moved to 2-0 with the early season non-conference win while the River Hawks fell to 1-1.
In the 14th minute of the opening half, Coverdale notched her first score of the year off of a feed from Emma Durantine to put F&M ahead 1-0. That tally held until the 24th minute when a Susquehanna foul led to a Caitlin Morrissey penalty shot opportunity that was successfully converted for the 2-0 Diplomat edge.
Following the first 35 minutes of action, F&M dominated the shot count at 13-0 and penalty corners at 6-1.
Coverdale put the game away for good in the 52nd minute, collecting a pass from Emily Nagle and finding the back of the cage for the decisive 3-0 advantage.
The final shot count belonged to the Diplomats at 17-1 while F&M also led in penalty corners at 9-1. Lily Mynott paced the Diplomat offense with five shots, including four on cage. Melissa Gula added four shots, while Coverdale was credited with three.
Goalkeeper Ilianna Santangelo (2-0) picked up her second straight shutout to begin the season as the senior now has 23 in her illustrious career - which places her fourth on the program's all-time list. Her counterpart Veronica Green (1-1) was charged with the loss after stopping four shots and allowing three goals in 55:36 of play.
F&M continues its season on Wednesday, welcoming FDU-Florham to Tylus Field for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
