Season in Review: 2017 F&M Field Hockey

Franklin & Marshall field hockey reinforced its position as one of Division III's top programs after a dominating season, tallying an 18-4, 9-1 Centennial Conference (CC) record, winning the CC Championship for the first time since 2012 and earning the program's first Final Four appearance since 1983.

The Diplomats earned an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament after traveling to Johns Hopkins and beating the host school 2-1 in the CC Championship on Nov. 5., with goals from Annie Horsley '18 and Lily Mynott '21 The 2017 campaign marked the program's 11th tournament appearance and fourth consecutive.

No. 10 F&M earned home-field advantage in the NCAA First Round and defeated Misericordia 2-0 after goals from Horsley and Sarah Schannauer '18 on Nov. 8, giving the Diplomats their fourth-straight appearance in the Sweet 16.

The Diplomats traveled to Christopher Newport where the team defeated No. 9 Montclair St. 2-1 after Erin Coverdale '20 tied the game in the 26th minute and Nicole Bodo '19 delivered the game-winning goal in the 61st minute on Nov. 11. F&M followed by shutting out No. 8 Kean 2-0, sparked by a Horsley penalty stroke in the 58th minute to take the lead and a goal from Coverdale 90 seconds later secured F&M's Final Four berth. 

The Diplomats traveled to Louisville, Ky. to take on No. 2 Middlebury, falling to the eventual National Champions in a tough 2-1 OT decision on Nov. 17. 

The 18 wins matched a program record for single-season victories and capped off a record-breaking season across the board. Three Diplomats set program career records, which included Sydney Cole amassing 15 game-winning goals, Annie Horsley reigning supreme with 10 made penalty strokes over her career, and Sarah Schannauer's 17 defensive saves placing her in the top spot.

The team's national dominance carried over into the postseason as several Diplomats were honored for outstanding play. First-year head coach Kaitlyn Eager and her staff were honored as Regional Coaching Staff of the Year for the South Region, while F&M placed members on the All-America team for the seventh consecutive season.
