Diplomats Blank Cougars to Advance to Final Four

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Franklin & Marshall's No. 10 field hockey team took down No. 8 Kean 2-0 on Sunday afternoon to advance to the Final Four for the first time since 1983. 

F&M improved to 18-3 while Kean ended their season at 21-3.

The Diplomats looked to get on the board early with back-to-back shots from Emily Nagle but were unable to convert on the opportunities.

The Cougars were next to look to take the lead with a penalty corner in the 12th minute, but F&M's defense remained strong to keep the score evened at 0-0.

F&M got another look in the 23rd minute after being awarded a penalty corner, but Sarah Schannauer's low shot sailed wide of the cage for the score to remained tied at 0-0 going into the half. 

F&M led in shots 5-3 while penalty corners were tied at 2-2 after the first frame.

Ilianna Santangelo came up with two big back-to-back saves in the 41st minute of play.

Nagle had a good look off a cross from Lily Mynott in the 43rd minute to try and give F&M the lead, but the shot went wide to the right.

Playing with a man-down after a green card, Santangelo came up with three saves after back-to-back penalty corners to keep the score even at 0-0.

Annie Horsley gave F&M the 1-0 lead with a penalty stroke in the 57th minute after Abby Straub took a foul in the circle. 

Less than a minute later, Erin Coverdale intercepted a pass and fed a cross into Nagle in front of the net. Nagle chipped the ball over the goalie's head to extend the lead 2-0.

Kean looked for one last chance to change the momentum with a penalty corner in the 61st minute, but the Cougars' shot sailed wide. 

The Diplomats will travel to Louisville, Ky. for the Final Four game on Friday, Nov. 17 against Middlebury at 7:00 p.m. Stay tuned to GoDiplomats.com for updates.
