SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Franklin & Marshall's women's basketball team notched a 54-50 victory over Grove City to open the weekend in California on Saturday. The Diplomats improved to 4-5 while the Wolverines dropped to 7-5.
Grove City took an early 8-3 lead, but a Lindsey Powers three at the 4:51 mark brought F&M back within two. The Wolverines went on a 5-0 run over a two and a half minute span, but Haley Pilone tallied the final bucket of the quarter off the Sarosha Parsons steal, bringing the score to 15-10 in Grove City's favor.
Starting with a layup from Parsons, the Diplomats went on an 8-0 run that included four points from Kristin Hamill to take an 18-17 lead with 6:17 left in the half. Both teams battled for the lead as two free throws from Sarah Pisani tied the contest at 21-21 with 2:34 left, but the Wolverines were able to hold onto a 27-24 edge going into the break.
F&M opened the third quarter with an 8-3 run, taking a 32-30 lead with 2:59 left. Back-to-back shots from Powers and Hamill kept the advantage in F&M's favor, but Grove City was able to respond with five unanswered points to tie the game at 37-37 going into the final frame.
Sparked by five-straight points from Kenna Williams in under a minute, the Diplomats recorded an 8-0 run to take a 45-39 lead with 7:31 left to play. The Wolverines threatened, coming within three, but Parsons knocked down two free throws to keep the deficit at five. Emily Moran tallied two more free throws along the way, but Grove City fought back to take a one-point lead with 2:28 left, but F&M ended the game with five unanswered points to hold onto the 54-50 win.
F&M shot 73.9 percent from the free throw line, going 8-for-9 in the fourth quarter to help secure the victory. Hamill paced the offense with 14 points while Williams tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Diplomats return to action tomorrow, taking on host UC Santa Cruz at 4:00 PM EST (1:00 PM PST).
