LANCASTER, Pa. – A strong second half helped Franklin & Marshall take down Washington 59-45 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats improved to 9-14, 6-12 CC while the Shorewomen dropped to 6-17, 4-14 CC.
Washington came out strong taking a 12-5 lead with 4:43 left in the first quarter. A Kristin Hamill layup brought the Diplomats back within five and AnnMarie DiCarlo knocked down a three with 27 seconds left to bring the score to 14-10 at the end of the first.
Haley Pilone put away two free throws to start the second quarter and bring F&M within two. Back-to-back threes from DiCarlo and Pilone gave the Diplomats the 18-16 edge with 8:13 left, but the Shorewomen ended the quarter with a 5-0 run to take back the 23-18 lead at the break.
Hamill netted the first six points of the half to give the lead back to F&M 24-23 with 7:02 left in the third. Devandria Bernard hit a jumper to break the tie at the 4:36 mark and a Pilone three gave F&M the 29-24 advantage with 3:50 left in the third. The Diplomats kept the pace to hold the 33-26 lead with one quarter remaining.
Free throws from Sarah Pisani gave the Diplomats the 10-point lead with 6:43 left in the game. Pilone knocked down a three to help the Diplomats to the 46-35 lead with 3:28 left. Strong free throw shooting from Bernard and Anajha Burnett late in the game gave F&M the 59-45 victory.
Pilone led all scorers with 16 points, going three-for-four from behind the arc. Hamill followed with 14 points and brought down eight rebounds. Pisani dished out five assists.
The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday, hosting Dickinson for a 6:00 p.m. matchup.
