COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A strong fourth quarter helped to lift Ursinus 74-58 over Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball on Wednesday evening. The Diplomats dropped to 8-11, 5-9 CC while the Bears improved to 10-11, 7-9 CC.
Ursinus held a slight three-point advantage to start the fourth quarter, but an 8-0 run to start helped the Bears to a 57-11 edge with 7:04 left to play. A layup from Sarosha Parsons ended the Ursinus run at the 5:52 mark. A three from Haley Pilone ended another 5-0 run by the Bears to bring the score to 62-51 with 3:16 remaining. The Bears kept the pace to finish out the game 74-58.
Ursinus gained an earlier lead to start the game with a layup from Kristin Hamill evening the score at 2-2. A three from Sarah Pisani kept the Diplomats within five with 1:13 left in the first. Devandria Bernard hit a shot at the buzz to minimize the Bears' lead to 16-13 at the end of the first.
Pilone knocked down a three to start the second quarter and tie the game at 16-16. Ursinus countered with an 8-0 run that was cut short by a Bernard layup at the 4:38 mark. Hamill brought the Diplomats back within four at 24-20 and 3:45 left in the half. Back-to-back threes from Pilone closed out the half to bring the score to 31-26 at the break.
Scoring remained close to start the third quarter. A layup from Pilone brought F&M within three at the 8:18 mark. Back-to-back layups from Parsons closed the gap, 44-40, with 2:20 left in the third. Pilone tied the game with a free throw at the 0:57 mark, but an Ursinus three gave the Bears the 49-46 edge going into the fourth.
Pilone dropped 20 points, going four-for-ten from behind the arc. Hamill delivered her 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and a career-high 16 boards. With four assists on the night, Pisani reached 303 career assists.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday, hosting No. 18 Muhlenberg at 1:00 p.m.
