LANCASTER, Pa. – Dominant starts in both halves led Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team to a 72-57 win over Immaculata in the second game of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats improved to 1-0 on the year while the Mighty Macs dropped to 1-1.
A layup from Haley Pilone extended F&M's lead 11-4 halfway through the first quarter. A Kristin Hamill layup, followed by an Erica Dwyer three-pointer kept the Diplomats' lead 17-9. The quarter ended with a 5-2 run from the Diplomats, culminating in a Pilone three to extend the lead 22-15 at the end of the first.
Strong rebounding from Erica Brown helped F&M to 31-19 lead just three minutes into the second quarter. A late run from Immaculata brought the Might Macs within five, but a steal from Dwyer and layup from Brown gave the Diplomats the 35-28 advantage going into the break.
A 12-5 run from F&M to start the third quarter ended with a dish from AnnMarie DiCarlo to Dwyer made it 49-33. The Diplomats maintained the pace increasing the lead from a Brown jumper with 1:04 left in the third.
Immaculata looked to shrink the gap, but strong rebounding from Brown and Devandria Bernard kept the ball in F&M's hands. Back-to-back free throws from Pilone extended the lead to 70-51 with 2:11 left in the game.
Pilone led both squads with 22 points on the night, burying 3-of-6 from behind the arch. Brown tallied 21 points and led the team with 13 rebounds. Sarah Pisani dished out seven assists and came away with three steals, which was good for first on both teams.
The Diplomats will take on Elizabethtown on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the Championship game of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic.
