After dropping down to the Consolation bracket following his First Round loss to Iowa's No. 5 ranked Samuel Stoll in Session I, Pelusi responded against Dempsey, the nation's No. 21 wrestler.
The bout with Dempsey served as a rematch of the fifth-place bout at the 2018 EIWA Championships, which saw Pelusi prevail with a narrow 2-1 (TB2) decision to claim an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Thursday's contest with Dempsey began with a Pelusi takedown in the opening minute of the match. Dempsey quickly escaped, but Pelusi followed with his second pin of the frame in the closing seconds of the first. Another escape from Dempsey made it a 4-2 score after one.
Dempsey chose down to start the second and came away with another escape to pull within one. Pelusi was aggressive in the frame and forced Dempsey to fight off several shots. Unable to land a takedown, Pelusi went into the third ahead 4-3.
Choosing down to start the third, Pelusi registered the escape only 12 seconds in. He followed with his signature leg sweep for his third takedown on the match. Demsey took one final shot late in the period, but Pelusi side-stepped the attempt and got behind his opponent for his fourth and final takedown of the bout for the 9-6 win.
Against Love, Pelusi scored a takedown in sudden victory for the 3-1 decision win. Each grappler traded escapes in the opening seconds of the second and third periods to head into sudden victory.
In the extra frame, both wrestlers exchanged shots in the early going. Love missed down low and Pelusi capitalized, working his way behind his opponent and scoring two points for the takedown and win.
