Diplomats Hit the Road to Battle Penn

LANCASTER, Pa. – The fifth-straight Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opponent lines Franklin & Marshall's schedule this week as the Diplomats hit the road on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Penn.

Scouting Penn: The Quakers head into Saturday with a 5-3 dual record and are coming off of a thrilling 19-18 win over Army on Jan. 14. Penn faces Bucknell (12:00 p.m.) and Binghamton (2:00 p.m.) in the Palestra on Saturday afternoon before hosting the Diplomats at night in Rockwell Gym. 

Penn is led by 197-pounder Frank Mattice, who is ranked No. 10 in the nation and currently holds an 18-3 record. The all-time series, which dates back to 1924, still favors the Diplomats at 26-23-1 overall.

Brown Dual Recap: Edgar Garcia's pin at 4:33 in the opening 125-pound match against Brown got F&M off to an impressive 6-0 start, but the Bears followed with five-consecutive wins to take a commanding edge. Josh Young also delivered six points to the Diplomats with a pin at 1:30 in the 174-pound bout en route to the hard-fought 33-12 loss.

Harvard Dual Recap: The Crimson won each of the opening four bouts, before Emmett LiCastri got F&M on the board with a strong 9-3 decision win over Brock Wilson at 157 pounds. Antonio Pelus handled Angus Cowell at 285 pounds with a 3-2 decision to close out the match by picking up a first-period takedown and holding off Cowell the remainder of the way. Harvard took the match by a 30-6 score.

Pelusi No. 31 in Coaches' Panel Rankings: The NCAA released the first of four coaches' panel rankings for the 2017-18 wrestling season, with F&M 285-pounder Antonio Pelusi debuting at No. 31. The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. This year's event is March 15-17 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Wins Leaders: Antonio Pelusi, a 2016 NCAA Qualifier at 285 pounds, paces the Diplomats with a 16-5 record, including a 6-1 mark in duals.

Freshman Brett Kulp (141 pounds) is 14-11 with a 5-5 dual-meet record while classmate Wil Gil (133 pounds) has garnered a 13-13 record, and has registered a team-leading four pins. 

Anthony Mancini holds an 18-9 record this season, competing unattached at 184 pounds, while Paddy Quinlan, also competing unattached, has accumulated a 14-7 mark.

Pelusi's Hot Streak: Pelusi has won 10 of his previous 11 matchups, dating back to Dec. 2. The 285-pounder holds a 4-1 mark over EIWA opponents during that stretch.
