LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's DI wrestling team opened its home dual schedule in Mayser on Saturday, falling to a pair of Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opponent's Brown (33-12) and Harvard (30-6).
The Diplomats dropped to 1-9, 0-6 EIWA on the year with the two doubleheader results.
In the opening dual of the day against Brown, Edgar Garcia got F&M off to an impressive start at 125 with a second-period pin at 4:33. Knotted at 3-3, Garcia turned his opponent on the mat to deliver six points to the Diplomats.
The Bears climbed back into the match with a major decision at 133 to pull within two. At the 141-pound bout, Brett Kulp battled back from a first-period takedown with an escape in the third to come within one. However, Kulp was unable to connect on a late shot and fell by a 3-1 decision after a riding time point was awarded to Brown's James Pawelski.
A pair of Bear decisions at 149 and 157 kept the score close, with Brown leading at just 13-6. Emmett LiCastri gave the nation's No. 26 grappler Justin Staudenmayer all he could handle at the 157-pound bout, but was unable to score points in a narrow 2-0 loss.
After a Brown pin at 165, Josh Young dominated at 174 pounds with a first-period fall at 1:30 to make the score 19-12 in favor of the Bears. Seven points were as close at F&M would get through the remainder of the match, as Brown earned bonus points in each of the final three contests for the 33-12 win.
Later in the afternoon against Harvard, the Diplomats managed to keep the score close in the early going after dropping decisions in two of the first three matches. The Crimson won each of the opening four bouts, before Emmett LiCastri got F&M on the board with a strong 9-3 decision win over Brock Wilson at 157 pounds. LiCastri stormed in front with a takedown and four nearfall points in the opening period and cruised to the decision win.
Antonio Pelusi, ranked at No. 31 in the season's first NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings, handled Angus Cowell at 285 pounds with a 3-2 decision to close out the match. Pelusi picked up a first-period takedown and held off Cowell the remainder of the way.
The Diplomats continue EIWA competition next Saturday by traveling to Penn. for a 7:00 p.m. tilt.
