Diplomats Host Brown, Harvard in Opening Home Duals

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall wrestling is set for their home dual opener on Saturday, welcoming Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opponents Brown (12:00 p.m.) and Harvard (2:00 p.m.) to the Mayser Center.

Scouting Brown: The Bears head into action with a 0-3, 0-1 EIWA dual meet record after falling to American (18-17) and Maryland (19-16) by narrow scores last Saturday. Brown is led by 184-pounder C.J. LaFrogola, who is ranked No. 16 in the nation. 

Last year, the Diplomats fell to the Bears by a 36-4 score on the road with Paddy Quinlan securing F&M's lone win, a 13-4 major decision at 141 pounds.

Scouting Harvard: The Crimson are 2-0 on the year after downing Stanford (21-20) and Maryland (22-21) last weekend. Harvard is led by 174-pounder Josef Johnson, a two-time NCAA Qualifier who is ranked at No. 20 in the nation by The Open Mat.

Last year, the Diplomats fell to the Crimson by a 36-6 score on Jan. 21. Edgar Garcia picked up a 4-1 decision win at 125 pounds while Anthony Mancini earned a 2-1 decision in the first sudden victory period at 184 pounds. 

Drexel Dual Recap: F&M led Drexel through the opening four matches before the Dragons pulled away in a 30-12 decision last Thursday night in Philadelphia. The Diplomats earned three wins on the day courtesy of 141-pounder Brett Kulp (Fall 7:34), 149-pounder Wil Gil (Decision 4-2) and 285-pounder Parker Fox (Decision SV-1 3-1).

Princeton Dual Recap: F&M suffered a 37-9 setback against EIWA-foe Princeton on the road last Saturday evening. Antonio Pelusi captured the Diplomats' only win after dominating from the onset of his 285-pound match, recording a pair of takedowns in the first frame on his way to a 7-4 decision win.

Millersville Open Recap: Paddy Quinlan (141 pounds) and Anthony Mancini (184 pounds) provided quality performances at the "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic in Millersville on Saturday, with each unattached grappler placing at the tournament. Quinlan overcame an opening-round loss by wrestling back to finish third while Mancini went 2-1 to notch a second-place finish.

Pelusi No. 31 in Coaches' Panel Rankings: The NCAA released the first of four coaches' panel rankings for the 2017-18 wrestling season, with F&M 285-pounder Antonio Pelusi debuting at No. 31. The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. This year's event is March 15-17 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Wrestling Social: Immediately following the end of F&M's dual against Harvard on Saturday, wrestling will be hosting a pizza social for friends of the program in the Roschel lobby, which is the building connected to the Mayser gym. 

Wins Leaders: Antonio Pelusi, a 2016 NCAA Qualifier at 285 pounds, paces the Diplomats with a 15-5 record, including a 5-1 mark in duals.

Freshman Brett Kulp (141 pounds) is 14-9 with a 5-3 dual-meet record while classmate Wil Gil (133 pounds) holds an impressive 13-12 record, and has registered a team-leading four pins. 

Anthony Mancini holds an 18-9 record this season, competing unattached at 184 pounds, while Paddy Quinlan, also competing unattached, has accumulated a 14-7 mark.

Pelusi's Hot Streak: Pelusi has won nine of his previous 10 matchups, dating back to Dec. 2. The 285-pounder holds a 3-1 mark over EIWA opponents during that stretch.
