PRINCETON, N.J. – Franklin & Marshall continued a tough stretch of Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) competition with a tough 37-9 setback against Princeton on Saturday evening.
The Diplomats fell to 1-7, 0-4 EIWA with the loss while the Tigers improved to 1-6, 1-1 EIWA.
F&M battled in the early going, forcing Princeton to settle for a trio of decisions to open the dual. Brett Kulp (141 pounds) nearly pulled off the upset of Pay D'Arcy, a 2017 NCAA Qualifier and fourth-place finisher in the EIWA Tournament. After earning a third-period escape to knot the score, Kulp was unable to pick up the takedown as D'Arcy won with a riding time point at 5-4.
Six of the Diplomats' points came by way of a forfeit at 157 pounds, before Princeton went on a tear with four-straight pins to put the score out of reach. Antonio Pelusi continued his string of impressive dual performances with his fifth-consecutive dual win at 285 pounds.
Pelusi, a 2016 NCAA Qualifier, dominated from the onset with a pair of takedowns in the first frame on his way to a 7-4 decision win.
In other action on the day, Paddy Quinlan (141 pounds) and Anthony Mancini (184 pounds) displayed quality performances at the "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic in Millersville by each grappler placing at the tournament. Each competing unattached, Quinlan came in third while Mancini notched a second-place finish.
The Diplomats return to the mat next Saturday, Jan. 20 when F&M takes on Brown (12:00 p.m.) and Harvard (2:00 pm.) in the opening home duals of the season.
