NEW YORK, N.Y. – Franklin & Marshall's Division I wrestling team battled Hofstra in the early stages of Sunday's road dual against Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opponent Hofstra, but ultimately fell short by a 30-6 score.
The Diplomats dropped to 0-1, 0-1 EIWA with the defeat while the Pride now sit at 1-0, 1-0 EIWA.
Starting at 197, Hofstra opened with a narrow 7-4 decision and followed with a pin at 285 by Mike Hughes, who is ranked No. 8 in the nation, to go ahead by an early 9-0 score. F&M began to mount a comeback with a thrilling 9-1 win from Edgar Garcia in the first sudden victory period to pull within six.
Garcia forced the extra period with a reverse and a takedown in the third and then picked up his second takedown of the bout in sudden victory.
Dan Martoccio carried a 5-3 lead into the third period of his 133-pound match but eventually fell short by a 6-5 score, before Brett Kulp earned his first-career dual victory with a 4-2 win in the opening sudden victory period. Kulp recorded a third-period escape to even the score in the third, and then notched his first takedown of the match in sudden victory to secure the win.
Cole Aaron also forced sudden victory at 149 pounds but fell short after suffering a takedown in the first overtime, as Hofstra rattled off wins in each of the last five matchups to earn the victory.
The Diplomats travel to Binghamton's Bearcat Open next Sunday. The tournament is set to begin at 9:00 a.m.
