NEW YORK, N.Y. – Rick Durso (No. 9) came up just short in his quest for a third career trip to the 141-pound quarterfinals with a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat in his second round matchup, while Antonio Pelusi saw his tournament come to a close with a narrow 2-0 decision loss to round out day one of competition for Franklin & Marshall's wrestling team at the 2016 NCAA D1 Championships in Madison Square Garden.
An updated bracket heading into tomorrow's third session can be found here.
Facing the bracket's No. 8 seed Joey Ward of North Carolina, Durso fell behind early with an opening-minute takedown, before landing a clutch reversal to knot the contest at 2-2. However, the Tar Heels' grappler escaped Durso's grasp and went into the second ahead by one.
Durso started out the second on bottom and scored the only point of the frame with an escape of his own to set up the decisive third period. Ward began the final stanza on bottom and earned another escape to once again go ahead by one. With time ticking down, Durso took multiple shots but was unable to register the takedown en route to a heartbreaking one-point loss.
In tomorrow's consolation second round, Durso will go against Chattanooga's Mike Pongracz, who downed No. 10 Todd Preston of Harvard by a 5-3 decision to advance.
Pelusi matched up against EIWA-foe Columbia's Garrett Ryan in the wrestlebacks at 285. Neither heavyweight managed to score points in the first and Pelusi started out the second on bottom but was rode out. With the riding time in Ryan's favor, Pelusi gave up an early escape in the third and was unable to register a takedown before the match drew to a close.
Session three begins Friday at 11:00 a.m. with the second and third round of wrestlebacks, as well as the Championship Quarterfinals. All matches are available on ESPN3 and are being streamed on WatchESPN, found here. Fans can also follow the action with live results, found here.
